Day 1 | Boston, Massachusetts - Berkshires, Massachusetts
Distance: 122 miles / 196.3 km
Depart Boston and proceed toward The Berkshires in Massachusetts. The Berkshire Hills is a beautiful place to visit any time of the year. The Berkshires is known widely as a cultural Mecca of museums, historic sites, music, dance and art venues. In addition to arts and cultural venues, the region also offers outstanding opportunities for golfing, hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, fishing, whitewater rafting, canoeing and kayaking. All of these activities take place amid spectacularly scenic rural hills, dotted with mountain streams and lakes. Tonight you will stay in the Berkshires. Depart The Berkshires and drive toward The Green Mountains. On your way to the Green Mountains you will pass Manchester. Nestled at the Mount Equinox South Manchester is a Village with its tranquil old-world atmosphere and Center a shopper's paradise that is completely different from the village with its signs, sights and many shops. Manchester is also home to Hildene, Robert Todd Lincoln's 412-acre summer estate. Lake Winnipesaukee is the largest lake in the state of New Hampshire and the 6th largest lake in the United States that lies within the boundaries of one state. Surrounded by three mountain ranges, the wooded shoreline and crystal clear water of this spring-fed lake make it a popular year round resort, a place to rest and relax in beautiful surroundings. Your visit at Lake Winnipesaukee is not complete without an excursion out onto Lake Winnipesaukee. From Weirs Beach, even with its vast view, you are only seeing a part of the Lake. In the center of the Weirs Beach boardwalk, you'll see a train station where tickets can be purchased for cruises. There are dinner, dance, sunset, family, foliage and fireworks cruises. An Alternative is the Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad. Route rides on tracks that have been in use for over 100 years.
